Salvage yards will also frequently have tiny hand basins, once housed in a vintage bathroom vanity, available for custom mounting. There are even reproduction companies casting new wall-mounted sinks and hand basins taken from designs originally housed in the cupboards and closets of trains and train sleeping cars.
While the more obvious capacity of a double bathroom vanity would meet storage needs, there are also a great many single basin units that could provide storage for a bathroom. For example, there are many units modeled on antique and vintage furniture. These vanities tend to have unusual design elements from more standard cabinetry, with short legs or feet, oversized countertops and often double-door cupboards below the basin. Such a bathroom vanity could easily hold towels, cleaning products and many personal items and toiletries.
A new trend in bathroom design and remodeling is to recycle old or vintage pieces of furniture into a clever and unique bathroom vanity or storage piece. Bathroom design has only been in development for a century, which may seem like a long time, but in terms of design and decoration, is fairly new. Early bathrooms were made to be a sterile and easy-to-clean necessity but have now developed into lavish home spas and sanctuaries.
